Performing Arts.- Wilde (Oscar) The Importance of Being Earnest, one of 1,200 copies prepared for George Alexander as a souvenir of the twentieth year of his management of the St. James's Theatre, signed presentation inscription from Alexander to front free endpaper, original green cloth, gilt, spine a little darkened, light rubbing to tips of spine and corners, 1910 § Campbell ( Mrs Patrick) My Life and Some Letters, one of 100 deluxe copies signed by the author this unnumbered, portrait frontispiece, plates and illustrations, light browning to endpapers, original boards, gilt lettering, minor bumping to spine ends and corners, light surface soiling, 1922, 8vo (2) ⁂ George Alexander (1858-1918) and Mrs Patrick Campbell (1854-1921) appeared together in the premier of The Importance of Being Earnest at the St James's Theatre. Their relationship was an infamously acrimonious one; the animosity allegedly began during an earlier play when Alexander had to take Campbell in his arms and kiss her and she could barely control herself. He sent her a note afterwards saying "Mr Alexander sends Mrs Campbell his compliments and begs her not to laugh at him on stage." She replied, "Mrs Campbell sends Mr Alexander her compliments and says she never laughs at him till she gets home."
