The atlas, 2 parts in one volume, engraved titles, the second dated 1811, 4 leaves of printed indices, 80 engraved plates, charts and maps, 32 coloured by hand, 5 folding (some maps rebound, one reinserted). Text volumes uniformly bound in contemporary calf, blind roll-tool borders on covers, spines gilt and blind in compartments. Atlases in contemporary half calf with marbled boards, spines similarly decorated. Provenance : Russian Imperial Library at Tsarskoe Selo (library stamps, in French with Imperial Eagle in first four volumes, in Russian in the last). A FINE SET OF THIS ACCOUNT OF THE EXPEDITION TO AUSTRALIA AND THE SOUTH SEAS under the command of Baudin, with Péron as naturalist and Freycinet as cartographer. Sailing via Mauritius and arriving in Australian coastal waters in May 1801, the Géographe and Naturaliste went north to Timor surveying and noting the inhabitants and natural history, before sailing to Tasmania and on to Sydney. The southern coast of the continent was thoroughly surveyed, naming it 'Terre Napolén' and giving French Imperial names to various sites, before they returned to Mauritius via the northwestern coast-line. This account contains the first complete map with details of the coast of the Australian continent. (5)
