Type: 5:180, Kesler 7:120*, 4:112, 7:93 b, 6:93 a. 2- to 8-line initials in red, several with contrasting penwork decoration, red paragraph marks and capital strokes. Contemporary south German blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards tooled with Christ's head stamp [?Schwenke Christuskopf 7 = Bamberg, Capucins], unicorn, rosette, and other tools, "Maria" tool on spine, later paper spine label, MS quire guards, remains of MS signatures in red (cornerpieces and clasps missing, lightly rubbed). Provenance : Gordon S. Allen (sale Christie's, 9 December 1981, lot 82). Fifth edition of Petrus Lombard's On the Sentences, a work fundamental for the study of medieval theology; it was a required text at virtually all universities throughout Europe well into the Renaissance.
