Augsburg: Johannes Schönsperger, 1519. 2° (348 x 235mm). Calligraphic type attributed to Vinzenz Röckner, elaborate flourishes. 118 magnificent woodcuts. (Light water stain to upper corner, more prominent to early and final gatherings, also visible to lower and fore-edge margins of gatherings r-B, small stain running across e2-e5, lower half of a8 supplied in pen-and-ink facsimile, flourishes occasionally shaved at top edge, light spotting throughout, heavier to first gathering, occasional minor marginal worming, occasional small closed tears to lower edge due to single worm hole.) Fine contemporary blind-stamped panelled pigskin over wooden boards, covers richly ornamented with a floriate device to the central panel, central section of top and lower boards with bevelled edge, brass clasps (minor staining to lower cover, one clasp and one catch missing). Provenance: early inscription in German on front pastedown -- David ?Emen (early ownership inscription to lower edge of title-page) -- Horace de Landau (1824-1903; bookplate). FIRST ISSUE OF THE SECOND EDITION OF ONE OF THE FINEST ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF THE GERMAN RENAISSANCE. Identical to the first (Nuremberg, 1517) in terms of the text but with slight differences in the orthography and in minor details such as the placing of flourishes, this edition was printed using the same woodcuts and the distinctive type created specifically for the first edition. The type was designed by Vinzenz Röckner, the Emperor's court secretary, and the woodcuts - amongst the finest of the German Renaissance - were commissioned from some of the greatest woodcut artists of the period, including Beck, Schufelein, and Burgkmair. A chivalric poem, composed to mark the occasion of the marriage to Mary of Burgundy. Maximilian himself was closely involved in the composition and painting of Tewrdanck , Emperor Maximillian, though he turned over the completion and general editing of the work to Melchior Pfintzing, his private secretary.
