First state. 24½ x 18 in., some separation at centerfold. Otherwise in very good condition. PHILADELPHIA DURING THE REVOLUTION In the wake of the French and Indian War, relations between the 13 American colonies and Britain deteriorated, spiking European interest in the restive colonies and their topography. The city and environs of Philadelphia--focus of much of the revolutionary activity and the headquarters of the Continental Congress-were of particular interest. Faden, Geographer to the King and by 1777 the leading map-maker in England, endeavored to meet this demand by creating a detailed new map, drawing on earlier English maps and surveys, especially the 1752 survey of Philadelphia by Nicholas Scull (1692-1762) and George Heap. That map had been embellished with a large engraved view of the Philadelphia State House, placed at the top of the engraving. Perhaps to distinguish his map, Faden placed a finely engraved rendering of the State House at the bottom of his engraving. He also revised and corrected certain place names and defenses. (These efforts did little to seriously hinder General William Howe who succeeded in capturing the city in the Fall of 1777.) Nebenzahl, Atlas , p.118; Snyder, 47; Stevens & Tree, 69.
