Two full-page frontispieces of painted coats of arms, f.2r containing the heraldry of the holy roman empire and f.3r insignia associated to the order of cardinal, both surrounded by tassels and naturalistic flowers, all leaves ruled in gilt. f.4r with an illuminated initial ‘D’ decorated on the infill with a pink rose and 4 buds. Contemporary full red morrocco, densely tooled and stamped in gilt on the cover with a central heraldic device of a church patriarch, attractive decorative paper on the pastedowns. Condition: some slight staining and creases to the vellum; 8 of 24 gilt tassels purposefully rubbed out on front and back covers, lacking orginal red ribbons. Provenance: binding indicates ownership by a high-ranking church official. f.6v with the official stamp and signature of phillippus iosias caucci , titular patriarch of constantinople (1760-1771). The contract grants the title of Vicarius , or stand-in, to Joseph Hippolito de Rubeis as patriarch of the Eastern Church, and is issued from S. Maria Maggiore in Rome.
