Title: Photo album of USMC Red Devil Squadron 232 Author: Goodman, Warren H. Place: Various Places Publisher: Date: 1943-45 Description: Approximately 140 photographs "Taken by, of, and near [Warren H. Goodman]". Various sizes from 2¼x1¾ to 8x10, tipped to the pages of a period photo album, most with caption in manuscript of album pages. Photos include various squadron members, group photos of the pilots in uniform, officers, gunners and radiomen, scenes in the Solomon Islands, Aukland, New Zealand, Bougainville Island, etc. Also includes a number of photographs taken post-war in Elmsford, New York, Upper Marlboro, Maryland, as well as 2 8x10 photos from the wedding of Capt. Goodman, one of which shows a group of guests including members of the Soong family of China. In August 1942, the opportunity came to avenge the attack on Pearl Harbor and Wake Island. Flying SBD-3 Dauntlesses from Guadalcanal's 3,000 foot dirt runway, the Red Devils became the first Marine dive bomber squadron to fly against the Japanese. Redesignated yet again as Marine Torpedo Bombing Squadron 232, the Red Devils, flying newly acquired Grumman TBF-1 Avengers, continued to pound enemy shipping, airfields, and installations throughout the entire Pacific until the end of hostilities in August 1945. Lot Amendments Condition: Album covers lacking, album pages chipped at edges, a few photos with creasing; overall very good. Item number: 185165
