Photo credit: Lynne McCready Formerly the property of Barbra Streisand 1976 MERCEDES-BENZ 450SL ROADSTER Chassis No. 107044.12.034563 Black with tan leather interior and black soft top Engine: 90 degree 4.5 liter overhead cam V8 with Bosch Fuel Injection, 275.8ci., 180bhp at 4,750rpm; Gearbox: automatic; Suspension: independent all around with unequal A arms and coil springs in front and coil springs and swing axle in the rear; Brakes: four wheel discs. Left hand drive. The SL series (Super Light) of Mercedes-Benz sports cars began in the late 1950s with the 300SL and 190SL. In 1963 both models were replaced with the updated 2.3 liter 230SL which, with continuous mechanical modifications, grew in engine size to 2.8 liters. By 1971 the square 280SL was replaced with a more streamlined car that also featured an impressively quick 3.5 liter engine. Further refinement led to the 450SL model as represented by the car on offer here. The new Mercedes-Benz sports cars were perhaps their best yet and managed to combine the comfort and luxury characteristic of the German firm's automobiles with the time honored tradition of true sporting open cars. The 450SL could reach 60mph in 10.2 seconds and is described by drivers as being a suprisingly quick and agile machine. This car was formerly the property of Barbra Streisand who sold it at Christie's in the sale of her property in New York, December 1999 (lot 1067) to the current owner. Since then the Mercedes has been kept in storage and has not been driven, so it will require some recommissioning. The panelwork looks straight and would definitely benefit from a proper clean and polish. The Mercedes Tex interior is quite clean and a mobile telephone hook-up is fitted. The recorded mileage is now showing 43,487. Further features include tinted power windows, air conditioning, power locks, an aftermarket alarm system and a Kenwood stereo and cassette deck. The 450SL appears to be in well maintained condition. These sporty 4.5 litre roadsters are suitable cars as daily drivers or as weekend open top touring cars.
