The Virgin is seated in front of a green drape and wearing a crimson robe covered with a dark veil, gently supporting the Child who sits on her knee, turning towards her. They are flanked by St John the Baptist and St Joseph, behind whom a landscape extends on either side of the drape. The Christ Child holds a goldfinch, symbol of his future Passion, and reaches his hand out to his mother’s cheek as though to console her. This ordered and balanced composition is a perfect example of works that follow in the tradition of Giovanni Bellini’s paintings, for example the Madonna and Child with St Paul and St George (inv. 610) and the Giovanelli Sacra Conversazione (inv. 881), both in the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. Other similar compositions by Ingannati may be compared with this painting, including the Virgin and Child with St John the Baptist and a female saint, in the Museo Borgogna in Vercelli, and the Virgin and Child with St Peter and St Paul, in the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (inv. BF.1984.2).____________________________________________
BF.1984.2).
