Title: "Plain Language from Truthful James," appearing in Overland Monthly Volume V, 1870 - first appearance of Bret Harte’s “Heathen Chinee” Author: Harte, Bret Place: San Francisco Publisher: John H. Carmany & Company Date: 1870 Description: Overland Monthly, Volume V. 584 pp. The poem titled "Plain Language from Truthful James," is on pp. 287-288. (8vo) half leather and marbled boards. First appearance of the poem which later became known as the “Heathen Chinee” from Harte’s lines, “…for ways that are dark / And for tricks that are vain, The heathen Chinee is peculiar…” Ironically, the poem, intended by Harte as a lampoon of racial prejudice, became a literary favorite of the anti-Chinese racist movement which was then at its height in northern California. Lot Amendments Condition: Rubbed extremities; Ex-library with bookplate and blind stamp on title page, rubberstamp at top margin to a few pages; very good. Item number: 248965
