First appearance of the poem which later became known as the “Heathen Chinee” from Harte’s lines, “…for ways that are dark / And for tricks that are vain, The heathen Chinee is peculiar…” Ironically, the poem, intended by Harte as a lampoon of racial prejudice, became a literary favorite of the anti-Chinese racist movement which was then at its height in northern California.
