lot of 2. Includes a rattle with painted rawhide cover and soft hide handle, length 17.5 in.; AND a hide-covered gourd rattle with black ink drawings of dragonflies and a turtle, both water symbols. Rattle also with dyed red horsehair on handle, length w/o hair 8 in. ca early 20th century Dr. Kent Vickery (1942 - 2011) grew up with parents who were avid collectors of Native American Southwestern arts and crafts. Kent started developing his own collection in the 1950's while on family vacations. Summer excursions to various Pueblos and to the Gallup Ceremonials sparked a true love in Kent and spurred him to earn his PhD from Indiana University in Anthropology/ Archaeology where he specialized in Ohio Valley archaeology. He taught at the University of Cincinnati in the Anthropology Department for almost 34 years and on retirement, he and his wife, Karen, moved to Woodland Park, CO. Provenance: From the Collection of Dr. Kent and Karen Vickery Condition: Both with expected wear; silk ribbon frayed on rattle with horsehair.
