Beschreibung:

PLATO Απαντα... Omnia opera, ex vetustissimorum exemplarium collatione multo nunc quam antea emendatiora. Basel: Henricpetri, (March 1556) Folio (310 x 188mm.), text in Greek, woodcut printer's device on title-page, woodcut initials, a few annotations in pencil or red crayon, eighteenth-century English speckled calf, red morocco lettering-piece, title-page slightly soiled, joints repaired, binding rubbed The second Basel edition, first printed in 1534 and prepared by Simon Grynaeus; this edition, revised by Marcus Hopper and Arnoldus Arlenius, is considered somewhat inferior. The somewhat optimistic preface by Marcus Hopper (Petri's son-in-law), addressed to Basilius Amerbach, lauds the efforts of Arlenius in collating the earlier edition with new manuscripts. LITERATURE:VD16 P 3276 PROVENANCE:marquess of Camden, armorial bookplate (probably John Jeffreys Pratt, second Earl Camden, 1759-1840), from the 5th Marquess Camden Will Trust, sale, Bloomsbury Auctions, 15 September 2010, lot 1229Condition ReportCondition is described in the main body of the cataloguing, where appropriate.
