PLINIUS SECUNDUS, Gaius. The Historie of the World: commonly called the naturall historie... , London: by Adam Islip, sold by John Grismond, 1635-34. 2 volumes bound in one, 2, large woodcut vignette on each title, woodcut headpieces and intials (first title with long closed tear, outer margins of first few leaves lightly waterstained, lower margin at beginning lightly wormed, a few ink stains, occasional light soiling or browning), contemporary calf (front joints cracked, spine worn, very rubbed). The earliest extant encyclopedia, "an enormous repository of ancient knowledge and belief about cosmography, geography, anthropology, zoology, botany, medicine, metallurgy, mineralogy and the fine arts", first published in English in 1601.
