The lives of the noble Grecians and Romanes, compared together by that graue learned philosopher and historiographer, Plutarke of Chæronea, first edition of this translation, translated by James Amyot and Thomas North, woodcut medallion portraits within decorative cartouches, head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials, lacking initial blank, title and final 2 ff., provided in facsimile, F3 and 3T3 supplied from other copies, 2C3&4 outer margin frayed, affecting printed side-notes, water-stained, a few marginal repairs, later calf, rebacked, corners repaired, marked, [STC 20066; Pforzheimer 801], folio, Imprinted at London by Thomas Vautroullier and Iohn VVight, 1579. ⁂ This translation '. . .forms the major source for the plots of Shakespeare's classical plays as well as suggestions for numerous passages in the non-Roman ones. . .some hints of A midsummer night's dream are clearly derived from the Life of Theseus' (Pforzheimer).
