POE, Edgar Allan. The Raven. Illustrated . New York: W. Jennings Demorest, ca. 1870.
POE, Edgar Allan. The Raven. Illustrated . New York: W. Jennings Demorest, ca. 1870. 12 o (145 x 103 mm). Illustrations in text. Original pictorial wrappers (some light soiling). First separate American edition. "The Raven" had first appeared in the 29 January 1845 issue of the New York Evening Review . The earliest book printing was the April 1845 appearance in an elocution manual, and it was first collected in The Raven and Other Poems , November 1845. BAL 16216 records the first separate edition as an 1869 edition printed in Glasgow. This edition by Demorest was produced as a magazine premium and was given to those who sold multiple subscriptions to his two magazines. According to Mott, Young America was published from 1866-75 and Demorest Monthly from 1866 to 77. This is an unusual separate printing, scarce due to its distribution as a magazine premium. Two other copies have been located, one missing the ads. Regardless of the broad range of possible printing dates, Demorest has the distinction of printing the first separate American edition. Unrecorded by BAL, Heartman & Canny. Mott III:175-6, 325-8.
