POLAK, J[akob] E[duard]. [ Handbuch der Anatomie des menschlichen Körpers ], text in Persian, register in Persian and French. Teheran: 21 April, 1854. 8° (178 x 106mm). Lithographic text, ruled in red, blue and gold and with outer border in red, illuminated headpiece on recto of final leaf, contemporary Persian glazed lacquer covers, hand-painted with floral sprays, backed in leather (light crack marks on covers, restoration to spine, joints cracked, inner hinges strengthened, new free endpapers). THE FIRST WORK ON ANATOMY TO BE PRINTED IN PERSIAN, dedicated to the Shah, Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar. An Austrian Jew, J.E. Polak was appointed Professor at the Teheran Medical College and personal medical advisor to the Shah in 1851, and remained in his post until 1856. He later published Persien, das Land und seine Bewohner (Leipzig, 1862-63, 2 volumes). Hirsch/H. IV, 643.
