POST MEDIEVAL GOLD RING OF COLOUR SERGEANT DANIEL BEARE 19th century AD A D-section gold hoop with flared foliage and scroll decorated shoulders, enclosing a rectangular flat plaque with inscription 'D.BEARE COLr SERGt', for Colour Sergeant Daniel Beare fighting in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, awarded with Indian Mutiny Medal. 7.83 grams, 22.20 overall, 19.70mm internal diameter (approximate size British T 1/2, USA 9 3/4, Europe 21.89, Japan 21) (3/4"). Very fine condition. Provenance Property of a central London collector; acquired from a large private collection formed in the 1980s. Footnotes The Indian Rebellion of 1857, also called the Indian Mutiny, was an unsuccessful rebellion against British rule in India in 1857-58. It began in Meerut by Indian troops in the service of the British East India Company, and spread to Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, and Lucknow. In India it is often considered to be the First War of Independence, since the rebellion was an event of great importance in the front of history of modern India. There were political, economic, social and religious reasons behind the rebellion, however the breaking point was a dispute over the use of greased cartridges of new rifles; Muslims were forced to use pig grease and Hindus grease from cows, both of which were considered highly offensive by both religions. Although the rebellion was widespread, it didn't succeed for several reasons, such as the weak support of local leaders, limited resources, and the disinterest of the middle classes. However, as a result, the Parliament of the United Kingdom withdrew the right of the British East India Company to rule India in November 1858.
