Original blindstamped green ribbed cloth, gilt-lettered on spine (slightest rubbing). Provenance : purchased with the following from Hamill & Barker, Chicago, 1978. First American editions, second (corrected) printing; second state of volume one, with the printer's imprint on the copyright page. BAL 16340; Hill, p.240; Sabin 65262. VERY FINE. [ With :] PRESCOTT, William Hinkling. History of the Conquest of Peru, with a Preliminary View of the Civilization of the Incas . New York: Harper and Brothers, 1847. 2 volumes, 8 o (238 x 148 mm). Half-titles. Two engraved frontispiece portraits, engraved map, engraved facsimile. (Some foxing.) Original blindstamped olive green cloth, gilt-lettered on spine (spines a little faded, a little rubbed); quarter morocco slipcase. First American edition, first issue, without the period after "integrity" in line 20, page 47 in volume II and without the printer's imprint on the copyright page in volume I (no priority). BAL gives priority to the English edition, although Bibliographical Notes to the Grolier list cites the American edition, listing an earlier publication date for America.
