James Horsburgh, Scottish hydrographer who mapped sea routes to Singapore and China Author: ** Place: Canton Publisher: Date: 1836 Description: Lithographic printing of the handwritten minutes of a "Public Meeting held at Markwick's Hotel, for the purpose of taking into consideration the measures proper to be pursued to render a lasting tribute of respect to the memory of the late Capt. Horsburgh..." On 1st page of 4-page folio, paper watermarked J Whatman Turkey Mill 1836. 30.5x25.6 cm. (16x10¼"). The leading merchants in the China trade and commanders of the ships engaged in the trade band together to offer tribute to James Horsburgh (1762-1836), author of author of Directions for Sailing to and from the East Indies, China, New Holland, Cape of Good Hope, and the interjacent Ports..., the standard work for eastern navigation in the first half of the 19th century, without which their mercantile efforts would have been considerably more difficult. Pledges of funds were made by some 38 individuals, with their names and amounts listed, presenting a valuable roster of leading figures in the China Trade in the first half of the 19th century.
