[1901]. 8vo, pp.1-8, brown paper wrappers printed in red and black, 'Edinburgh Burns Club Balmoral Hotel, 23rd March, 1901', tied with a tartan ribbon. Printed 'for private circulation'; with the Menu and Toast List, 'Edinburgh Burns Club Annual Dinner 23rd March 1901', 8vo. The Annual Burns Club Dinner of 1901 had been deferred from January because of Queen Victoria's death. Conan Doyle was invited to be the guest of honour, and proposed the main toast, The Immortal Memory , which was 'warmly applauded'. After the event, it was suggested that the speech be printed 'in a form that could be bound up with the menu card' (Green and Gibson, B2). The full address later appeared in the Scotsman on 25 March 1901. Together with a collection of 50 menu cards, toast lists, table plans, programs, some in manuscript and watercolour, together with club diaries, member lists and handbooks etc, covering the period from 1890 to 1936, SEVERAL INSCRIBED AND ANNOTATED BY CONAN DOYLE and Lady (Jean) Conan Doyle. With an accompanying note in Jean's hand, 'Menus and plans of tables of Public Dinners at which my darling and I were present - he being one of the speakers generally. On some of them there are notes made by him for his speech.' The collection includes: a menu card from a dinner given in honour of Mr Gustave Tuck, and other prominent Jews, annotated in Conan Doyle's hand with notes for his speech and a pencil drawing of a head in profile, also inscribed by Lady (Jean), 'drawn by my darling Arthur at the dinner given to Gustave Tuck (400 people were there)'; 2 copies of the 'Menu of Lotos Club Dinner to Arthur Conan Doyle', tinted lithographs, one signed by Conan Doyle in pencil, to commemorate the dinner held at St Menehould near Verdun (H.Q. 20th Division), June 11, 1916; menu card from the Second Annual Dinner of The British College of Psychic Science (1927), inscribed by Lady (Jean), 'Arthur and I received the guests - there were about 200 at the dinner'. Other events or societies include The Author's Club, The Society of Authors, Playwrights and Composers (President, Thomas Hardy , the Lyceum Club Psychic Science Circle Dinner, New Vagabonds' Club, Literary and Scientific Society, The British College of Psychic Science, and banquets given by Spiritualists of the United Kingdom before the Conan Doyles' departure to Australia (July 1920) and South Africa (October 1928).
