Property from a Collection formed by József Csetényi (1875–1956)
Jan Brueghel the Younger and Workshop of Hendrick van Balen the ElderDiana and her nymphs with the spoils of the chase in a forest landscape
oil on oak panelunframed: 70 x 97.5 cm.; 27 1/2 x 38 3/8 in. (including a possible horizontal strip of 4.5 cm. on the top margin)framed: 55.5 x 82.2 cm.; 21 7/8 x 32 3/8 in.Condition reportThe panel is uncradled and is very slightly bowed. It is possible that the top margin has been extended with a horizontal strip of wood approximately 4.5 cm. high. There appears to be an old repair to this extension which has been filled in. The paint surface is stable and is covered in a thin layer of varnish which is clear. There is well preserved brushwork evident throughout, particularly in the still life and landscape. There is a very light scratch visible near the deer hanging in the tree in the top left corner. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the entire surface is covered in a reflective varnish. There is evidence of retouching to the aforementioned repair, and there is very minor scattered retouching in the figures, background and accessories. Overall the painting is in a good condition and presents well.
