Property from a Distinguished American CollectionTiffany Studios"Dragonfly" Table Lamp
circa 1904with a rare “Turtle-Back” baseleaded glass, favrile glass, patinated bronzebase impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK/227oil canister impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK/227 with the Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company monogram19½ in. (49.5 cm) high17 in. (43.2 cm) diameter of shadeCondition reportOverall in very good condition. The present lamp is a dazzling pairing of Tiffany’s desirable “Dragonfly” shade model with a highly complementary and rare “Turtle-Back” base. When viewed firsthand, the shade displays a wonderfully varied aquatic palette of cerulean, azure blue and turquoise in the upper registers transitioning to lilac, violet and magenta. The translucency of the background passages impart the shade with strong luminosity and give the shade a brilliant jewel-like effect, which is further complemented by the iridescent Turtle-Back tiles of the base. The shade with approximately 4 hairline cracks dispersed throughout, stable. One dragonfly wing tile appears to have been sensitively replaced with well-matched period glass at some point in the history of the piece. The shade with some very minor traces of surface soiling concentrated to the contours adjacent to the lead lines, consistent with age. The etched filigrees overlaying the dragonfly wings appear entirely intact and present with some slightly more concentrated surface soiling to the recesses. The rare “Turtle-Back” base displays a warm brown patina with red and green undertones and brilliantly iridized Turtle-Back tiles. All of the Turtle-Back tiles appear original and undisturbed. The patinated bronze surfaces present with scattered minor surface scratches, wear and discolorations, consistent with age and gentle handling, as well as some occasional oxidation and traces of surface soiling concentrated to the recessed contours of the design. With a later replaced oil can, riser and socket arms. With period sockets. With a period finial. An outstanding example of the celebrated “Dragonfly” shade model harmoniously paired with a rare “Turtle-Back” base to create a truly stunning masterwork by Tiffany Studios.
