Property from a Private Collection
Attributed to Pieter van der Hulst the Youngeractive 1620 - 1637 AntwerpA town scene with riders and figures set among houses, a church and a bridge in the distance
oil on oak panelunframed: 48.8 x 74.4 cm.; 19¼ x 29¼ in.framed: 75.4 x 101 cm.; 29¾ x 39¾ in.Condition reportThe panel is uncradled and has a very slightly bow. There is the remains of a bevel on the right margin. The reverse of the panel bears two old canvas repairs approximately 1/2 and 1/3 from the bottom, which are presumably old splits in the panel. The paint surface on the front of the panel is in a stable condition, and is covered in a thick layer of old varnish which has yellowed. There is well preserved brushwork found throughout, including in the sky, trees and figures. There is evidence of old retouching along the aforementioned repaired panel splits. There are old scuff marks on the lower margin from the frame. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals further and very minor scattered retouching in the sky, trees, background and in some of the figures. Overall, the painting is in a moderate condition and would respond well to professional conservation.

NOTWITHSTANDING THIS ONLINE CONDITION REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE/BUSINESS APPLICABLE TO THE RESPECTIVE SALE.Catalogue noteThis work was created by a follower of the Antwerp painter Sebastiaen Vrancx (1547–1647), who excelled in painting energetic Flemish landscapes and town scenes featuring a multitude of figures. This painting is probably by the same hand as a similar townscape which sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam in 1998.1 Although then given to Hans Jordaens III, Marijke C. de Kinkelder of the RKD has since reattributed the work to Pieter van der Hulst the Younger (act. 1620–37), the elusive son of Pieter van der Hulst the Elder (1570–1627/9), to whom few paintings have been given with any certainty. The perspective, colouring, interest in architecture and handling of figures found here is remarkably similar to the panel sold in 1998.
1 Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 16 December 1998, lot 19 (as Hans Jordaens III).
