Property from a Private Ohio CollectionTiffany StudiosPair of "Grapevine" Windows
circa 1902leaded and copper-foiled glass selectively plated on the reverse, original oak frames (not illustrated)31⅜ x 11½ in. (79.7 x 29.2 cm) each excluding frame37⅛ x 16 in. (94.3 x 40.6 cm) each including frameCondition reportOverall in very good condition. The pair of windows depicts highly naturalistic grapevines as they sprawl over a geometric trellis. The composition is executed in a wonderfully nuanced palette of greens, browns and blues punctuated by violet grape bunches and set against a glowing sky of nearly translucent periwinkle and soft yellow. The windows with approximately 15 hairline cracks dispersed throughout, stable. The windows display very subtle bowing which is stable, consistent with age and typical for casement windows of this size. The windows with some traces of surface soiling concentrated to the contours adjacent to the lead lines and between the glass plates, consistent with age. The leadlines with occasional spotty evidence of later resoldering, not visually distracting. The windows are installed in their original oak frames which are in well-preserved condition with age-appropriate wear throughout, including scattered minor surface scratches, wear, abrasions, and discolorations, consistent with age and gentle handling. An intimate and painterly pair showcasing Tiffany Studios’ mastery of glass.

Acquired from the above by the present owner by acquisition of the houseLiterature“Among the Craftsmen: Some Houses Designed by Frank L. Packard, a Pioneer in the Building of Dwellings from Local Material and in Harmony with the Landscape,” The Craftsman, December 1907, vol. XIII, pp. 328-329 (for period photographs and floor plans of the John J. Caroll house)Catalogue noteThe present pair of “Grapevine” windows have remained in the same house since their creation in circa 1902. The house was originally built for John J. Carroll, a local merchant and owner of the local Carroll’s Department Store in Newark, Ohio. Designed by architect Frank L. Packard in Ohio, the house and its floor plan were featured in an article in Gustav Stickley’s magazine The Craftsman in December 1907. Highlighting some of the architect’s recent commissions, the article heralded Packard as “one of the first of our American architects to blaze out new trails in the building of dwellings that should be characteristic of American taste and local environment, and suited to individual needs.” The house was situated amongst a fertile landscape of native shrubbery and trees, and also featured ample awnings and trellises on which vines could sprawl. The grapevine motifs adorning these casement windows delightfully echoed the surrounding environment, extending the beauty of nature into the home’s interior and demonstrating Tiffany’s unrivaled glasswork. Purple grape clusters peak through lush green leaves and vines that appear to grow organically along each window’s edges. The foliage is set against a nuanced sky whose hues of lavender, periwinkle and warm golden yellow evoke the glowing light at dawn or sunset. Passed down to Carroll’s descendants and later acquired by acquisition of the house, the appearance of this pair at auction presents an opportunity for Tiffany collectors to acquire an exquisite example of the firm’s leaded glass windows.
