Property from the Loverdos Collection
Bernard Randolph
Two works bound in one volume, comprising:
The present state of the Morea, called anciently Peloponnesus: together with a description of the city of Athens, islands of Zani, Strafades, and Sergio. London: Will. Notts, Tho. Basset, and Thomas Bennet, 1689, third edition, 26 pages, folding map, 2 engraved plates, [Atabey 1012; Blackmer 1385; Wing R238]
The present state of the islands in the archipelago (or arches) sea of Constantinople, and gulph of Smyrna; the islands of Candia and Rhodes. Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1687, folding engraved map, 4 engraved plates, including a large folding plate of Constantinople [Atabey 1013; Blackmer 1386; Wing R234]
2 works in one volume, 4to (210 x 157mm.), later brown morocco, first folding map with short splits at fold, some browning
LITERATURE:As often, these two works are bound together, and the plates erratically distributed between them. All the plates called for in Atabey 1012 and 1013 are present, if not in the same order.
Although little is known about Randolph – he was engaged in the Levant trade – his text is written from the point of view of a merchant rather than of an antiquarian, and he describes the current conditions, prompted by his obvious economic interests.
