Mais si je ne cesse de desirer, je n'éspère jamais', continuing to reflect on the nature of happiness, and in conclusion hoping to understand better the Princess and her subject, both of whom in a way elude him, 'Je tacherai de mieux comprendre Alexandre et la princesse Bibesco, desquels une part m'échappe', 12 pages, 8vo (150 x 110mm) , autograph envelope to 'Madame la Princesse Bibesco nee Lahovary'. Marthe Bibesco's Alexandre Asiatique ou l'histoire du plus grand bonheur possible was published in April 1912. In this letter of mingled admiration and literary criticism, Proust writes of his own identification of happiness with the evocation of pleasures that are past, 'rien ne m'est plus étranger que de chercher dans la sensation immédiate, à plus forte raison dans la réalisation matérielle, la présence du bonheur. Une sensation, si désinteréssée qu'elle soit, un parfum, un clarté, s'ils sont presents sont encore trop en mon pouvoir pour me rendre heureux. C'est quand ils me rappellent un autre, quand je les goute entre le présent et le passée ... qu'ils me rendent heureux'. Earlier in the letter, he recalls the circumstances of their meeting (in 1911) at the dinner given by the proprietor of the periodical l' Intransigeant , a memory awakened by a similar invitation he received the day before the arrival of the book.
