PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius (ca 100-ca 170). Geografia, cioe descrittione universale della terra... Padua: Paolo and Francesco Galignani, 1598 (Part II: 1597). 2 parts in one volume, 2 o (301 x 207 mm). Titles with engraved vignettes incorporating printers' device, 64 engraved maps by Girolamo Porro consisting of a full-page double-hemisphere world map and 63 half-page maps, including 3 further world maps, woodcut diagrams in text, woodcut initials and ornaments. (Perforated stamp to title and last leaf, small ink stamp to first leaf, light marginal dampstaining.) Contemporary vellum (rebacked old spine laid down). FIRST EDITION of Leonardo Cernoti's translation of Magini's edition of Ptolemy. Porro's small engraved maps were first printed in quarto format in the original Latin edition of Magini's version (Venice: Galignani 1596). Alden & Landis 498.83; Phillips 405; Sabin 66506.
