Purchas his Pilgrimes. In five bookes. WITH: Purchas his Pilgrimage. London: Printed by William Stansby for Henrie Fetherstone, 1625-1626. Together, 5 volumes (the Pilgrimage being the fifth volume). 5 (of 7) double-page engraved folding maps and 81 half-page engraved maps in the text; plus numerous other text illustrations including engravings and woodcuts. Folio (315 x 204). Old calf rebacked with early spine labels laid down. Lacking maps of New France and the East Indies and the engraved additional title; title-pages trimmed and laid down with loss (except vol 2 in need of it), many preliminary leaves re-margined, in vol 1 4i4 and 4i3 transposed, just a few tears and chips with loss to a few letters each or to shoulder notes (some repaired), about 100 leaves in the middle of vol 2 with marginal loss at lower edge caused by water-damage, North America and China maps neatly detached and laid in, Virginia map worn at centerfold with several tears but only tiny loss and trimmed at lower edge with loss of most of imprint and chip to l.r. corner, brief marginal worming to about 50 leaves in vol 4, occasional mold visible in gutter margins, bindings well-worn and partially detached; overall, suffering from inexpert rebacking but text generally in nice condition, in need of restoration. First edition of Purchas his Pilgrimes and fourth edition of the Pilgrimage (issued contemporaneously). Early issue with "Hondius his Map of the Christian World" appearing on pp 65 and 115; and headline on p 704 reading "Hollanders lying devices." "One of the fullest and most important collections of early voyages and travels in the English language" (Sabin). It also includes some of the first examples in print of several oriental languages. "This great geographical collection is a continuation and enlargement of Hakluyt's The Principal Navigations. At the death of Hakluyt there was left a large collection of voyages in manuscript which came into the hands of Purchas, who added to them many more voyages and travels ... Purchas followed the general plan of Hakluyt, but he frequently put the accounts into his own words ... The main divisions of the work fall into two parts: the first covering the world known to Ptolemy, the second coming down to Purchas's own day. This fine collection includes the accounts of Cortés and Pizarro, Drake, Cavendish, John and Richard Hawkins Quiros, Magellan, van Noort, Spillbergen, and Barents, as well as the categories of Portuguese voyages to the East Indies, Jesuit voyages to China and Japan, East India Company voyages, and the expeditions of the Muscovy Company" (Hill 1403). Sabin 66682-66686. See illustration.
