Putto en porcelaine, Meissen, circa 1920, E.A 5/11 A Meissen figure of a putto (Putto or Amor), circa 1920Urstück [Artist's Proof] No. 5 of 11 Modelled by Paul Scheurich crouched and holding a bow in his right hand, the circular base decorated with sprays of indianische Blumen, signed 'Scheurich' in black to rear, 14.4cm high, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, incised model number F 275, impressed 'Bossierer' numeral 70 and painter's numeral 12 in grey, indistinctly impressed and incised 'von 11 Urstücken Nr.5' (top of bow restuck)FootnotesProvenance: Wolfgang Müller von Baczko (1894-1947), Director of the Meissen Manufactory 1936-40 Literature: Rafael 1995a, ill. 10.2 (left) Exhibited: Meissen, Schauhalle der Staatlichen Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen, Paul Scheurich 1883-1945 Porzellane für die Meissener Manufaktur, 21 September 1995-10 January 1996; Meissen, Museum der Meissen Porzellan-Stiftung, Paul Scheurich Porzellangestalter Zeichner Grafiker, 6 March 2020-21 February 2021 Scheurich completed this model in plaster before July 1917. It was originally conceived as a boy holding grapes and offered to the Meissen manufactory in July 1918. Scheurich altered the model in 1919 to depict Cupid holding a bow, probably at the wish of the manufactory, which purchased the figure the same year. This figure was one of the most successful of the modern designs at Meissen: by the end of 1931 around 400 had been sold.
