SAFAVID IRAN, LATE 16TH/EARLY 17TH CENTURY
QUR'AN JUZ' XV SAFAVID IRAN, LATE 16TH/EARLY 17TH CENTURY Qur'an XVII, sura al-usara and Qur'an XVIII, sura al-kahf vv.1-59, Arabic manuscript on paper, 13ff. plus 4 fly-leaves, each folio with 3ll. of alternating blue and gold muhaqqaq alternated with two slightly inset panels of 5ll. of small black naskh , each panel outlined in gold, gold roundel verse markers, marginal roundels in gold and polychrome indicating khams , sajda , nisf and hizb marked in blue naskh in the margins, two sura headings in white riq'a on gold panels with polychrome illumination, juz' marked in gold naskh in the margin at the beginning of the manuscript, an extra illuminated panel beneath the first sura heading, waqf occasionally marked in the margins in red, areas of staining, in modern tan morocco with stamped central medallion and pendants, ivory paper doublures Text panel 6¾ x 3½in. (15.9 x 8.5cm.); folio 9 x 6¼in. (23.1 x 16cm.)
