[RACING/INDIANAPOLIS 500]. Scrapbook of automobile, hot rods, and Indianapolis 500 photographs and ephemera. 1940s/50s. The scrapbook of an automobile and racing enthusiast, with over 150 photographs (generally 3 ½ x 3 ½” or 3 ½ x 5”), most silver prints, and a minority in color. Highlights from the album include four RARE and unpublished 1955 Indianapolis 500 photographs of Bill Vukovich’s #4 Hopkins Special car (Vukovich, a two-time Indianapolis 500 and then-reigning champion, was fatally injured during the race in a multi-car smash-up), with an issue of the Indianapolis News reporting the race and the crash; photos of the 1956 Indianapolis 500 including the cars of Pat Flaherty, Sam Hanks, Chuck Weyant, Cliff Griffith, and Rodger Ward; various automobile and hot rod custom shows; motorcycles; other cars; and assorted other family photos. Also includes several dragway timecards and pit passes (Oswego Dragway, Illinois, and U.S. 30 Dragway, Crown Point, Ind.). Lot also includes an Indianapolis Speedway souvenir felt pennant. Most photos captioned faintly in ink, often including make, model, race car identity, locations, and other personal notations. Also with an earlier (ca. 1920s) photo album from the same family, with some automobile photos as well as other family images (silver prints, approximately 150, generally 2 ½ x 4”) taken in the Chicago/Cook County area. Albums well worn, some prints detached.
