Circa 1883, the original cabinet card photograph of C.F. Bolton, also known as "The Gentleman Bandit" and "Black Bart", as commonly reproduced for books and other publications. Measures 8-1/2" x 5-1/2", without frame. Professionally framed in a silver and gilt frame on acid-free paper. Card marked “Taber/ Elevator / 8 Montgomery Street, / Opposite the Palace and Grand Hotels, / San Francisco. OVER.”. On obverse, notations about copies are written. The card is in excellent condition with one minor crease 3" down, on the left and one minor stain on his head. Corners show minor wear. This rare image is shown on page 70 of "Black Bart: The Search is Over" by Robert E. Jernigan and Wiley Joiner. The caption reads "A photograph of a rare photograph. Possibly the only time Bart was listed as "Charles E. Boles". He was known around San Francisco as C.E. Bolton, a well-respected citizen of the city who was a mine owner and a mine engineer." A rare original image of one of the most famous stagecoach bandits! Previously sold at auction on June 22, 2015 at Brian Lebel's Old West Show & Auction.
