Beschreibung:

Nominal dimensions 7.25" wide by 4" tall by 3.25" deep, with the inner flap having attached ears on the side and the outer flap measuring nominally 8.5" by 5.125". Bridle leather construction with white buff closure tab, containing five section tinned magazine on interior and two japanned roller buckles for sling attachment on the bottom. Brass closure stud on bottom, guides for sling straps on rear. Interior of outer flap stamped with a tombstone cartouche that reads: S. ISAAC CAMBELL & CO in an arc over 71 JERMYN ST / LONDON. These boxes were intended to carry 50 cartridges in packets of ten in each of the compartments of the tin. The British military used these boxes to carry reserve ammunition with the cartridges that were taken out of the packets carried in a smaller pouch known as a "ball bag" or "ready pouch", however the Confederacy did not utilize the boxes in that fashion and used them as a standard cartridge box carrying both loose cartridges and packets in the tin magazine. When these boxes are encountered today many have the buff leather closure tab cut at an angle and it has been postulated that it was done intentionally to make the box easier to open in the field where Confederate soldiers were using it to access each round, rather than using the British issue ready pouch. Images of Confederate soldiers using these imported British boxes are well known. S. Isaac, Campbell & Company were the single largest supplier of arms and military equipment to the Confederacy during the course of the war and they sold thousands of cartridge boxes of this pattern to the south during that conflict. Today surviving S. Isaac, Campbell & Company marked examples are extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors. For an example of this same pattern box with the same marking and similarly cut closure tab refer to The English Connection by Pritchard, Huey, Prince, etc. on pages 242 and 243. Condition: Very good and in overall solid condition. Leather with moderate surface scuffing and finish loss. Buff tab has become detached at some point in time and reattached in the modern era without utilizing the blind stitch used during the original construction. The buff closure tab was cut as is common on these boxes and apparently stitched back together at the same time the tab was reattached, as the restorer did not know that the the cut was correct and typical. That added stitching has been removed but the tab still shows some holes from the stitching. Box with some stitching loss, with the left inner flap ear partly detached and right one with some thread loss as well. Buckles remain in place and the tin magazine shows moderate surface rust on its interior.
