Description: Rare Imperial German Marine Seebatallion / Marine Korps Flandern Officers Dress Sword, fine example of the scarce variation naval officers sword of the Imperial German forces, having fold down guard with Imperial crowned anchor to the centre within a border with laurel leaf wreath, the guard having fine quality relief, leading to a lion head with correct non jewelled eyes. The grip is in black fish skin with wire binding. Plain brass rear catch fitting. Housed in its black painted steel scabbard with gilt mount fittings. Curved single edged blade with fine quality etching in the form of foliage, sailing ships and anchors. Much of the original polish remains to the blade. The blade measures 80cms, overall 95 ½ cms. The German Seebatallion was the naval infantry or marines of the Imperial German army. Pre-WW1 they were heavily involved in the expansion of the German Empire in the Far East, especially in China, mostly in Tsingtao. With the outbreak of WW1, the German Marines became more important and eventually the Marine-Korps-Flandern was created.
