A story of poaching & murder in North Staffordshire. This 13" high painted figural group tells the story of Wm. Collier a poacher & tenant-farmer who murdered Thomas Smith who had caught him poaching. Collier was hanger for his crime at a public exicution on Aug. 7th, 1866. When the first attempt to hang Collier failed due to the knot slipping they lead him back up the scaffolding and hung him successfully the second time around. An interesting historical group figure with both men a dog and 2 game birds, very well painted with much detail and nice colors. Condition:Near perfect with very tiny chips on applied floral.
