Paris: Guy Marchant [in part] for Jean Petit 6 and 10 Apr. 1499. First edition, first issue of theological works by the Spanish theologian, called Doctor Illuminatus. The humanist scholar Jacques Lefevre d’Etaples championed Lull in Renaissance France, editing the present volume and translating the first and third works from Catalan to Latin, drawn to Lull’s direct moral theology and mystical thought. The last work, Phantasticus, is written as a dialogue between Lull and a cleric who disagrees with Lull’s moralism and therefore considered him crazy. They discuss madness from various points of view. The present copy is the first (A) of three variants, dated 6 (not 10) April 1499, and without a printer/publisher’s device.
