HISTORY - SUKARNO. Autograph letter to his Minister Dr. Bahder Djohar. Autograph letter from the former president of Indonesia, Sukarno, dated '29/11 '50' and signed 'Sukarno' on his printed and blind-stamped (star, upper centre) stationery 'Presiden Republik Indonesia'. Folio, written in Bahasa Indonesian, single sided in ink, folded twice. The letter concerns the proposed appointment of the Dutch writer Jef Last, as a teacher in English and History at a school in Singaradja. Paper browned, with creases and folds, one small tear (centre right margin), with round white stickers mounted on 4 perforation holes. Artist or Maker: SUKARNO. Provenance: Private collection; Jef Last Notes: Clearly Sukarno supports 'the desire' of the school to give Jef Last the job. Not in the least because he "is a friend of our people". First of all he was a personal friend of Hatta and Sukarno, who knew some poems of Last by heart and he was in Indonesia because they invited him to come over. In fact the letter is a recommendation by Sukarno, handed out to Jef Last as a written statement of his consent. With a separate translation in Dutch.
