Large 4 o (253 x 182 mm). 6 etched plates of botanical specimens (some light browning and staining). Contemporary citron morocco, tooled in gilt in the second half of the 19th century to a pictorial and architectural Renaissance design, partly painted (see note below). (Upper hinge cracked.); marbled cardboard slipcase. Provenance : Arezzo, Jesuit College (PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION FROM REDI on title); T.J. Coolidge (bookplate); acquired from David O'Neal, 1984. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY ON LARGE PAPER. Redi's scientific analysis of some fantastic reports brought back to Europe from the Americas by Jesuit missionaries. He describes tobacco, the torpedo-fish, Chinese fennel and other subjects. The plates depict spices and condiments including vanilla, pepper and others. The pictorial binding decoration is by the same forger as the binding reproduced as the frontispiece to the Robert Hoe sale catalogue (now in the Hispanic Society, New York) and bindings in the Newberry Library Chicago, and the British Library (the Henry Davis gift).
