Title: Reminiscences and Incidents of "The Early Days" of San Francisco Author: Brown, John Henry Place: San Francisco Publisher: Mission Journal Publishing Co. Date: [1886] Description: 54 unnumbered leaves. Folding map. (8vo) 22.5x13.5 cm. (9x5½"), original green cloth lettered in gilt on front cover. First Edition. The author, a sometime fur trader, bartender, citizen-soldier, hotel builder, capitalist, and man of affairs, operated the Portsmouth House in 1846 and the City Hotel at various times between 1847 and 1850 at the corner of Kearny and Clay Streets. Cowan notes that Brown "was a well-known character in San Francisco... his book contains considerable information regarding those times, bit was poorly printed and exhibits but little attempt at proof-reading." Despite these flaws, as Kurutz notes, "his text gives wonderful detail on people and events as well as the operation of a Gold Rush hotel..." Cowan p.77; Graff 429; Howes B853; Kurutz 88a; Rocq 8429; Streeter 2999; Wheat Books 23; Zamorano 80 #10. With bookplate of San Francisco bibliophile Joseph M. Gleason. Lot Amendments Condition: Cloth lightly worn, hinges shaken; map lacking a bit more than one-third (a facsimile copy of the map is laid in); very good. Item number: 266135
