RENAULT R5 TURBO VIN. # B0001376 - MUCH SOUGHT-AFTER TURBO VERSION - NUMBER 1510 OF THE ONLY 1820 PRODUCED - HIGHLY ORIGINAL CAR. ORIGINAL ENGINE. - IN THE SAME COLLECTION FOR THE PAST 14 YEARS - ONLY TWO OWNERS, 14,500 KM COVERED FROM NEW This car cannot be defined the “Queen of the Rally” simply because it failed to meet one objective, moreover the all-important one for which it had been designed: the World Championship. Having said that, there can be no denying that its overall victories in the 1981 Monte Carlo Rally, in the Tour de Corse on two occasions (1982 and 1985), and in the 1986 Portuguese Rally prove its considerable worth. The R5 Turbo, not to be confused with the Renault R5 Alpine Turbo, a simple utilitarian car tuned according to the fashion of the period, shares few features with the baby of the Renault family, specifically its charming nose and part of the structure of the passenger compartment. Renault Sport took this project forward, trying, first of all, to make the car esthetically appealing so that it might be sold in sufficient numbers to be allowed to compete in Group 3 of the Grand Touring series. The target of 1,000 units was soon reached, because many people took to this delightfully aggressive little car. The inspiration behind it came from the legendary Jean Terramorsi, then vice production manager at Renault, who, knowing that rallies could no longer be won with a front-wheel drive, decided to take the engine of the R5 Alpine and position it longitudinally in place of the rear seats. The 94 HP developed by the little four-cylinder 1.4-liter engine was not enough, but a supercharged version was already in the pipeline, thus the available HP, already on the road version, was increased to 160, leading to exhilarating performances of the kind that this level of power can produce when having to drive only 970 kg. The R5 Turbo was always built at the Alpine facilities in Dieppe, France, and in 1982 it was replaced by another version, called Turbo 2, that was cheaper to build but much less refined and exclusive. The R5 Turbo offered for sale was first registered in Como, on July 17th 1981, and it remained with its first owner, the Renault dealership in Erba, until 21st December 2004, when it was bought by its present owner, a lover of this model who added it to his collection. Never used for racing, this car underwent its only modifications early on it its life, in the early 1980s: a more sporty front bumper was fitted, both bumpers were painted in the same color as the body color, and the two miniskirts were removed. An incredible car that has remained as new, having covered just 14,500 km in total (400 in the past 14 years).
