Richebourg Grand Cru--Vintage 1999
1 bottle per lot
Richebourg Grand Cru--Vintage 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Lot 60 bottle number 09772. Lot 61 bottle number 10779 Vintage note: A great vintage and, for ripeness and finesse, exceeding even the 1990. This vintage is a must. It demonstrated the total unpredictability of the weather, for the year started pretty miserably with an unusually wet spring, raining almost incessantly, clogging the earth between the wines. The wet conditions continued through April and May, though the first half of June was brilliantly hot and sunny with unusually high temperatures, 34 degrees - to quote from the DRC report - on 1,2 and 4 June, and 28 degrees on the 13th and 14th to provide perfect flowering conditions. However, the weather during the rest of June and through July was indifferent, variable. Happily, the crucial ripening periods, August and September, were both hot and dry, 'luxiriant' leaves creating, by photosynthesis, substantial sugar content, and the moisture reserves resulting from the earlier heavy rains preventing any ill-effects of drought, particuarly vital when the temperatures soared to 37 degrees for the first three days in August, and almost as high (up to 36.5 degrees) towards the end of that month. And 36 degrees from 9 to 15 September for the main harvest that followed. A generous quantity, one of the biggest ever, and high quality. ***** Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine Tasting note: Yield 35.2 hl/ha. 1231 dozen bottles, 25 above average: very deep, plummy rim; a very distinctive though underplayed nose; sweet, powerful. A broad, brooding wine with a lovely spicy finish. Feb 2002 (*****) A long haul wine, lacking the panache of La Tâche but magnificent in its way. From 2012, almost indefinitely Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine 1 bottle per lot
