RICK GRIFFIN Original Rock Poster Art * Janis Joplin / Albert King 1968

Estimate
US$2,000 - US$3,000
Price realised:

Beschreibung:

Pen and ink on heavy illustration board, measuring 7x10" (image area 3¼x7¼"). Unsigned but drawn by Rick Griffin who collaborated on the finished poster with Victor Moscoso Robert Beerbohm, Griffin's friend and acting agent at the time of his death in 1991, confirmed Griffin's sole creation of this work in a message to PBA's Director of Comics: "This prelim is definitely just Rick. Victor Moscoso would have done his own prelim. Then they combined their ideas into collaboration." Comics historian Craig Yoe agrees with Mr. Beerbohm's evaluation ("Bob's right." - 9/19/21 Facebook post). Very fine condition, with sun shadow and foxing to right margin, not affecting image area. Provenance: From the Collection of Gary Arlington, owner of the San Francisco Comic Book Company. Rock poster fans will readily recognize this finished pen and ink artwork as a preliminary for Rick Griffin and Victor Moscoso's classic poster for the May 1968 Janis Joplin / Big Brother and the Holding Company concert at the Shrine Exhibition Hall in Los Angeles (the concert also featured Albert King and Pacific Gas & Electric). The finished poster is featured in Paul Grushkin's The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, p. 277, and is part of the Pinnacle/Shrine series. Rick Griffin's preliminary artwork differs in several regards from the published version: the row of trees in the prelim was replaced in the poster by a row of snow-capped peaks; the stars surrounding the light bulb were repositioned above the snowy peaks in the finished version; the word balloons encapsulating "PG&E" were eliminated in the poster; and the Iron Cross and flip-top egg-like creatures in the prelim are entirely absent from the final design. The changes in the final design may have been due to Moscoso's own contributions, making this preliminary a wonderful glimpse into Rick Griffith's unfettered, unfiltered vision. A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
