Robert Gibbings Irish 1889–1958 - The Red Sea, 1938; pencil on xylonite, signed lower right 'Gibbings', 27 x 21.8 cm (ARR) Provenance: Patience Empson, and thence by descent Note: this work was made 20 feet under the water in the Red Sea. Gibbings was a founding member, alongside Eric Gill Gwen Raverat and John Nash of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920, known for his simplified modern style. Patience Empson edited 'The Wood Engravings of Robert Gibbings'.
