STEVENSON, ROBERT LOUIS. 1850-1894. A group of Stevenson related items:
1. Autograph Letter Signed ("Robert Louis Stevenson") in french to his friend "M. [Francois] Donat," 1 p, the first leaf of a bifolium, watermarked paper with "Vidalon," on board the Casco, September 10, 1888, folds. THE HOLOGRAPH ORIGINAL OF THE LETTER REPRODUCED IN THE 1925 GRABHORN PRESS EDITION OF R.L.S. to His Good Friend M. Donat Francois Donat-Rimarau was a friend to Stevenson in Tahiti, and the Grabhorn publication at the behest of Herbert Lionel Rothchild. See "South Sea Memories of R.L.S.," The Bookman, XLIII, 1916.
2. Autograph Letter Signed ("Robert Louis Stevenson") to Mr. James I. Dick, an appeal for funds, 1p, 8vo, Skerryvore, Bournemouth, Saturday, August 2, 1885, tipped to card, folds. James I. Dick is identified by Colvin as "head clerk and confidential assistant" in the family firm in Edinburgh.
3. On the Thermal Influence of Forests. "Edinburgh: Printed by Neill and Company, 1873" [But a Thomas J. Wise forgery, c.1895] Polished calf, gilt, monogrammed "RLS" in gilt to upper cover, bookplate of Caroline Tripp Clement, original wrappers bound in. Beineke 10; Prideaux, p 183; Todd 279f.
4. The Sea Fogs: A Chapter from The Silverado Squatters. San Francisco (Bohemian Grove): Grabhorn Press, 1942. Publisher's wrappers. 400 copies printed.
5. Original watercolor on paper of the Isobel Strong House, 380 x 240 mm, possibly signed "Marion Kavanaugh," paper repaired in two spots, framed
6. Photographic portrait of Fanny Stevenson, 8 x 10 inch gelatin silver print, matted to oval, pencil note to verso of frame, "Photo from the collection of Lloyd Osborne."
7. Portrait photograph of RLS, 8 x 10 inch silver print, mounted on board, matte glued to board, framed.
8. Small bust portrait mask of RLS, approximately 200 x 120 x 180 mm, signed verso, "A. Hutchinson / 1895," and "San Souci." Likely a later production of Hutchinson's life mask, by "San Souci."
Provenance: Property from the Collection of David W. Forbes.
David Forbes is the author of the Hawaiian National Bibliography and the editor of the diaries of Queen Lili'uokalani. Among his manuscripts at the time of his death was a work in progress on the letters of Isobel Strong, RLS's stepdaughter, based on the collection at the Huntington Library.
