Robert Polhill Bevan (British, 1865-1925)Polish Village watercolour and charcoal on paper 24 x 34cm (9 7/16 x 13 3/8in).FootnotesProvenance With The Fine Art Society, London, where acquired by The Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation, 1969 Their sale; Christie's, London, 21 November 2001, lot 130, where acquired by the present owner Private Collection, U.K. Exhibited London, The Fine Art Society, Channel Packet, Paris-London, 1880-1920, March-April 1969, no.12 Robert Bevan had close links with Poland due to his marriage to the painter Stanislawa de Karlowska, who was born and raised in Szeliwy, near the town of Lowicz in Russian-occupied Poland. Between 1900 and 1921, Bevan visited the country many times, his son Robert described how 'Poland wakened in my father a very intense affection, a romantic sympathy that is reflected in much of the work of these early years.
