Robert Riggs American, 1896-1970 Jazz on a High Note Signed Riggs (lr) Oil on panel 19 x 35 3/8 inches Literature: "Jazz on a High Note," Esquire Magazine, Dec. 1951, p. 84-85, illus. Depicting an early performance of jazz legend Louis Armstrong, the present work was created by Robert Riggs for a two-page spread for Esquire Magazine's December 1951 issue. It was reproduced in an article entitled "Jazz on a High Note," for which the subtitle read, "The great American musical fable, told in his own vibrant style by its most fabulous character, Louis Armstrong." Both Armstrong and Riggs were listed in the magazine credits. We thank Nat Humphreys, a long-time fan of the present work for sharing its history and for providing the correct title. C A New England Collection
Scattered touches of restoration: at the upper left edge and elsewhere. Modern pigments are difficult to interpret under UV light. Some contours appear to be reinforced with strokes on top of the original paint layer. It is unclear whether these are revisions by the artist or inpaint.
