ROOSEVELT, THEODORE, President . Typed letter signed ("Theodore Roosevelt") as New York Governor, to Senator Chauncey M. Depew, Albany, 5 January 1900. 1 page, 4to, integral blank, Executive Chamber stationery, two perforations at top, tiny separations at folds, lightly browned . A FAVOR FOR THE WIDOW OF A ROUGH RIDER KILLED IN BATTLE "Would you mind reading through the enclosed letter [not present] from Mrs. Isabel B. Hamilton, the widow of Col[onel] Hamilton who was killed beside me on Kettle Hill? He was a most gallant man. He had served 38 years in the army. Do you think you could help along the pension of his widow..." In the Spanish-American War, Roosevelt secured a field command with the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, popularly known as the Rough Riders. On 1 July 1898, the Rough Riders made their famous, costly, but successful charge up Kettle Hill, San Juan Santiago, Cuba. Captain John Morrison Hamilton (born in Canada), spent years in the frontier wars and was brevetted in 1890 for gallant service against the Tonto Apache in 1873. He was among those who fell at Kettle Hill.
