ROSS, John (1777-1856). Autograph letter signed ("John Ross"), to Captain George William Manby, London, 5 January 1850. 2½ pages, 8vo, horizontal tear along upper half of sheet repaired with tape, affecting address and 4 lines of text, loss on lower margin of second page. Ross writes to the inventor of the apparatus for saving life from shipwrecks and the prevention of accidents on ice. He discusses the generous patronage of Sir Felix Booth, who had provided Ross with funds for his expeditions, and extensively writes of cod fishing off of Greenland. Ross left in 1850 on a private expedition in search of John Franklin -- Autograph letter signed ("John Ross") to Julius, Count de Groeben, London, 17 February 1835. 1 page, with integral address panel . Ross writes to his German publisher about the translation of the narrative of his second voyage: "no one can have the German translation as soon as you.
