ROSS, John (1777-1856). Autograph letter signed ("John Ross"), to Captain George William Manby, London, 5 January 1850. 2½ pages, 8vo, horizontal tear along upper half of sheet repaired with tape, affecting address and 4 lines of text, loss on lower margin of second page. Ross writes to the inventor of the apparatus for saving life from shipwrecks and the prevention of accidents on ice. He discusses the generous patronage of Sir Felix Booth, who had provided Ross with funds for his expeditions, and extensively writes of cod fishing off of Greenland. Ross left in 1850 on a private expedition in search of John Franklin -- Autograph letter signed ("John Ross") to Julius, Count de Groeben, London, 17 February 1835. 1 page, with integral address panel . Ross writes to his German publisher about the translation of the narrative of his second voyage: "no one can have the German translation as soon as you. I hope to hear that you have begun the printing, and that it will go on quickly." -- [ With: ] JULIUS, Count de Groeben. Autograph letter signed ("Julius Groeben") to an unnamed correspondent, Dresden, 6 August 1843. 2 pages, 8vo . In German. Count de Groeben discusses the German biography of Ross. (3)
