Rossiaeskiaei tsarstvennyaei dom Romanovykh. [The Russian Tsarist Family of Romanov] St. Petersburg: K. A. Borozdin, 1893-96. 2 chromolithographic title pages hand finished with gold & colors, folding genealogical chart, 39 chromolithographic plates, mostly portraits, hand finished in gold & colors and heightened with gum arabic, numerous additional engraved portraits on card, hand-colored head-pieces. Folio (19 x 13). Contemporary 1/2 claret morocco gilt over marbled boards. Occasional age toning, residue of gum arabic staining on margins of some plates, chart separated at one fold, text block detached from binding. First edition. A stunning collection of hand finished portraits of the Romanov family from 1599 1896. Unlike the more commonly seen Moscow edition, this extremely rare collection of plates are hand-finished with brilliant colors, and was possibly commissioned as a separate production for the Romanov family. The only other copy located is an incomplete portfolio of plates in the Library of Congress. See illustration.
