Rumold Mercator (1545-1599) Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio. [Duisburg:] dated 1587, [but c.1595]. Rumold Mercator's striking world map. Gerard Mercator's great world map of 1569 was condensed into this double-hemisphere map by his son, Rumold. 'The engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names' (Shirley). The North Pole is illustrated as a landmass surrounding a sea from which four rivers radiate, and there is a well-depicted northwest passage. North America itself is presented as an almost contiguous land mass with a large lake and a few colonies marked out; California is represented as a peninsula. The mythical island of Frisland appears just south of Iceland, and a huge southern landmass Terra Australis and large New Guinea dominate the southern hemisphere. Shirley World 157; Van der Krogt 0001:1A (probably from 1:011 early edition by Mercator’s heirs). Engraved double-hemisphere world map, verso blank, elaborate strapwork borders, armillary sphere, compass rose, galleon and sea monster, 292 x 522mm (plate mark), 348 x 526mm (sheet).
